Scouts Question Fab Melo's Consistency

Dec 29, 2011 3:13 PM

NBA scouts want to see Syracuse center Fab Melo be more consistent before they consider him pro ready.

“[The] biggest issue with him is can he consistently look like a first round pick night in and night out for them,” one NBA scout said.

“Until and unless he can do that he will be considered as simply a player who came in with great hype but hasn’t lived up to it.”

Melo seems well aware of the criticisms against him and promises that there will be more nights like Wednesday.

“No, there will be more for sure,” he said. “I am going to work a lot and my game is going to get better.”

Dec 22, 2011 9:58 AM

Nerlens Noel could reclassify and become a member of the incoming college class of 2012. Noel is currently a high school junior.

“Yeah I’ve heard that one,” Noel said of the rumor. “I’m not gonna do that though. I’m 90 percent sure that I won’t reclassify. But the fact that those coaches think I can play now, definitely gives me even more confidence on the court.”

Syracuse, Providence, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgetown and Connecticut are considered the leaders for Noel.

Carmelo Believes Syracuse Will Win The National Title

Dec 15, 2011 2:41 PM

Former Syracuse star Carmelo Anthony is impressed with this year's team and thinks it has the talent to win a national championship.

“I think they can win it all,” Anthony said. “I’m biased, you might not agree with that. They have the talent, they have the team.”

Anthony spoke to the team after its 72-68 win over then-No. 10  Florida.

“I went up there to the game they played Florida, talked to them, tried to send some positive energy toward their way and it seems like they’re all on board, all on track,” Anthony said.

Dec 9, 2011 5:32 PM

Noah Vonleh is one of the most highly recruited high school sophomores in the country.

Syracuse and North Carolina appear to be the early leaders for the 6-foot-7 forward.

"Syracuse has real long guys and I feel like I'd fit into their defense," Vonleh said. "North Carolina, I like the way they get up and down the floor and their coach said I remind him of Harrison Barnes."

Fab Melo Becoming Defensive Anchor For Syracuse

Dec 6, 2011 6:07 PM

Last season, Fab Melo took on a complementary role and often found himself on the bench due to foul trouble.

But in his second year as a starter, the 7-foot center has cut his foul rate significantly and is blocking shots with more regularity.

Syracuse ranks 11th in points allowed per percentage and Melo’s defensive presence at the rim is allowing his teammates to gamble and force turnovers. Syracuse leads the country in steal percentage and ranks second in percentage of turnovers forced.

Melo ranks 9th in the nation in block percentage and sits 44th in offensive rebound percentage.

Colangelo: Boeheim Welcome To Return As Team USA Assistant

Dec 1, 2011 6:10 PM

Jerry Colangelo, who is the chair of USA basketball’s board of directors and the essential general manager of the USA national team, said the current crisis at Syracuse will have no bearing on Jim Boeheim being the top USA Olympic assistant to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for the 2012 Olympics in London.

“I am following the story just as everyone else is,’’ Colangelo said. “He’s a personal friend and a terrific individual. He’s part of USA basketball and from what I know at this point, I think he’ll be fine. The university is standing behind him. It has no impact on USA basketball. We’ll continue to monitor everything coming down the pike here.’’
